To be human means having “defects of character.”
Perfection—whether it’s our own or others’—is a heavy expectation we’ve been carrying around, and for some of us, it’s still a struggle. We’ve set ourselves up for constant shame when we fail or guilt when we expect too much from others who are just human.
A lot of us grew up with parents who demanded perfection, and even though we could never fully meet their standards, we learned to expect perfection from everyone else. It’s important to remember that our parents did the best they could, and we shouldn’t blame them for all our flaws. But the good news is, we can do something about those flaws. Letting go of the need for perfection lifts a huge weight off our shoulders. Sure, it helps sometimes—like when we have a big work task—but we’ve often lost perspective on it. Doing our best is actually more than enough, and if we believe in God, we can trust that God expects nothing more from us.
Today’s Affirmation:
I will try to do my best today, but I will not feel ashamed if I make mistakes.
