Our behavior won’t be irrational if we pause and think before acting.
When someone acts crazy, it’s easy to get caught up in it and start acting crazy too. But just because someone is angry—especially if it’s directed at us—doesn’t mean we have to get angry back.
To avoid reacting badly, all we need to do is take a moment to pause and think before we respond. Sounds simple, right? Well, it’s not always that easy, especially when we’ve spent years reacting without thinking and blaming others for the mess.
At first, this new way of handling things might feel awkward, and we’ll probably want to slip back into old habits. But by looking up to the people we admire, especially in programs like this, we can find the motivation to keep practicing and improving.

Today’s Affirmation:
I will become adept at thinking before acting. Today will give me many opportunities to succeed.

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey, also the author of Each Day a New Beginning for women, she has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her own recovery from addiction started in Twelve Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
