Accepting that we are powerless seems difficult at first.

We’ve spent so long feeling responsible for other people that the idea of letting go of control is pretty scary. What will they do without us? But maybe the more important question is, what will we do? What should we focus on when we’re no longer focused on others? When we first heard the Serenity Prayer, we probably didn’t really get it.

For most of our lives, we tried to force change or at least push for it. We couldn’t accept that things or people we cared about were the way they were. We thought, “If they only saw things the way we do, they’d change!” But now, we’re starting to realize we don’t have control over everything. And those moments of understanding don’t scare us anymore. Not being in charge of other people means we’re not responsible for their flaws either, and that part of letting go actually feels good.

Today’s Affirmation:

I Will enjoy my powerlessness today. “Giving up” the behavior of others will lighten my own load considerably.

A Life Of My Own

A Life Of My Own

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.

Karen Casey, also the author of Each Day a New Beginning for women, she has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her own recovery from addiction started in Twelve Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.

This summary is not a substitute for the original book; all quotes are paraphrased and credited to the author and publisher. Thank you.
