Giving up willfulness relieves the pressure.
The Big Book talks about alcoholics having “self-will run riot.” Well, we partners, parents, and friends of alcoholics are dealing with willfulness too.
Our world can feel all over the place whenever the alcoholic is drinking or out of sight because we’ve somehow tied our own happiness to controlling them. The crazy part is thinking we can actually control them.
The stress of trying to control something we can’t takes over our lives. At first, when we’re told to surrender our will to God and let Him take charge of the drinker, it’s confusing, and we resist. How can we trust God to make the drinker do what we want, right? But little by little, we’re starting to see that giving up control, letting go of worry, and not stressing over the outcome brings us a huge sense of relief.
Today’s Affirmation:
I Will let the people in my life have their own lives today.
Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey, also the author of Each Day a New Beginning for women, she has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her own recovery from addiction started in Twelve Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
