There are many degrees of insanity.
At first, Step Two‘s idea of getting restored to sanity might seem strange to us. After all, we’re not the alcoholics! We’ve spent years cleaning up after the out-of-control alcoholic. But luckily, the people in our group get where we’re coming from. They’ve been in our shoes, and since this program is all about sharing experiences, strengths, and hopes, we can learn from them.
They’re showing us that the way we covered for the alcoholic was actually “insane.” Our constant worry about what they were doing, where they were, and whether they were drinking or not was a form of insanity too. Most of all, thinking we could control them with our pleas, anger, or silence was just as crazy as their behavior. It’s such a relief to let go of that obsession. Sanity is possible, and with the help of our friends and our Higher Power, we’re getting there.
…
Today’s Affirmation:
I know the difference between sane and insane behavior. With God’s help, I’ll behave sanely today.

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey, also the author of Each Day a New Beginning for women, she has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her own recovery from addiction started in Twelve Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
