The friendships we enjoy through this Twelve Steps are unconditional, honest, intimate, and lasting.
The freedom to just be ourselves and let others know who we really are is probably the best gift we get from this journey. For so long, we were afraid that if people truly saw us, they wouldn’t like us—and even worse, they’d leave us. That fear and shame kept us feeling alone and isolated.
But now, we have friends who are just a phone call away. These men and women get what we’re going through—they understand the pain of having loved ones caught up in addiction. With them, we can talk about our worries and frustrations without holding back. They offer us comfort and advice, and we know they accept us without judgment, whether it’s about our actions or the struggles of our family members. Because of these friends, we can finally experience moments of peace.
Today’s Affirmation:
How grateful I feel that I have friends who will be glad to hear from me if I make a call. I won’t be scared and lonely today.
Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey, also the author of Each Day a New Beginning for women, she has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her own recovery from addiction started in Twelve Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
