Other people’s actions need not affect us.
Our program friends are teaching us how to stop taking on other people’s problems. We’ve learned that we’re not the reason a family member drinks too much or why a friend keeps going through the same drama, even if they try to blame us for it.
The program shows us that we can’t control others or force them to change. But when people point fingers at us, we often take it personally. Now, we’re learning how to stop accepting that blame. A lot of it comes from wanting to be liked—no one likes being criticized or angry with, and even strangers can upset us sometimes. But we can change that. We can learn to detach. Our program friends are great examples of this. Every day, we can practice letting go of what others say or do. Over time, it’ll become second nature to us.
Today’s Affirmation:
I will ask my sponsor for help if I let someone get to me today.
Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a stable force in the recovery of many alcoholics worldwide. With over nine million copies in print (the original text has been revised), this “little book” offers daily thoughts, meditations, and prayers for living a clean and sober life. It is a spiritual resource with practical applications in our daily lives.
Karen Casey is also the best-selling author of Each Day a New Beginning, a daily meditation for Women. She has spoken on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth for more than twenty years. Casey is passionate about helping others in the Twelve Step support groups, where her own recovery from addiction began more than three decades ago.
