We can stop creating conflict where none needs to exist

Conflict is a natural part of human interaction—especially when we struggle to accept someone else’s opinions or choices. But the good news is, we can learn to respect different perspectives and let go of the need to control. A great place to start is by practicing the Serenity Prayer.

Alcoholism doesn’t just affect the person struggling with it—it impacts the entire family. One common reaction is trying to control everything: their drinking, their emotions, their decisions, even situations that don’t directly involve us. But the truth is, we can’t control others, no matter how much we want to. What we can do is learn to let go. We can start believing that everyone is on their own unique path and that their journey doesn’t have to match ours. In fact, it’s those different perspectives and experiences that make life richer and more meaningful.

Today’s Affirmation:

I will honor everyone’s way of living today. Practicing this one day at a time will become a healthy habit.

A Life of My Own

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning, she has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her own recovery from addiction started in Twelve Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
