When we do for other people what they should do for themselves, we both stay stuck.
Sometimes, people only change when they really have to. Like when something hurts a lot or when they’re given a choice they can’t ignore. But making excuses for others or doing their work for them, even if we think it’ll help, doesn’t really make them change.
Most of us started here hoping someone else would change, but now we’re learning that the only person we can really change is ourselves. One of the first steps is to stop worrying about other people so much—what they think, how they act, or what they’re responsible for. Wanting them to meet our expectations is really about our own fears, not theirs. Every time we try to fix someone else’s problems or tell them what to do, we’re stopping both them and ourselves from growing. We probably meant well, but it’s time to let others figure out their own lives. The best thing we can do is focus on taking care of ourselves.
Today’s Affirmation:
I will not do someone else’s task today. Growth comes from each of us being responsible for ourselves.
Since 1954, A Life Of My Own has been a stable force in the recovery of many alcoholics worldwide. With over nine million copies in print (the original text has been revised), this “little book” offers daily thoughts, meditations, and prayers for living a clean and sober life. It is a spiritual resource with practical applications in our daily lives.
Karen Casey is also the best-selling author of Each Day a New Beginning, a daily meditation for Women. She has spoken on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth for more than twenty years. Casey is passionate about helping others in the Twelve Step support groups, where her own recovery from addiction began more than three decades ago.
