Detachment doesn’t mean denying compassion.
At first, approaching life with detachment might feel a bit cold. We’re used to helping others a lot, so when we start stepping back, it can feel uncomfortable.
Through this program, we’re learning a lot about ourselves. For example, we didn’t realize how much of our self-worth came from taking care of others. But detachment doesn’t mean we stop loving them. We’re learning that letting others handle their own lives is actually a more loving approach. It also doesn’t mean we can’t care deeply about them. It just means we need to stop doing things for others that they need to do on their own.
Today’s Affirmation:
I will evaluate my need for taking care of a friend’s problem today. Letting others take care of themselves is far more loving.
Since 1954, A Life Of My Own has been a stable force in the recovery of many alcoholics worldwide. With over nine million copies in print (the original text has been revised), this “little book” offers daily thoughts, meditations, and prayers for living a clean and sober life. It is a spiritual resource with practical applications in our daily lives.
Karen Casey is also the best-selling author of Each Day a New Beginning, a daily meditation for Women. She has spoken on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth for more than twenty years. Casey is passionate about helping others in the Twelve Step support groups, where her own recovery from addiction began more than three decades ago.
