“We admitted we were powerless….”
Accepting that we cannot control other people’s drinking problem is a huge step. We just want the best for them, right? Don’t they see that?
What we didn’t understand before this program is that everyone’s on their own journey. What seems like the right path to us might not be what they need to experience.
We might also be learning that one of our big lessons is letting go of trying to control others. We sometimes think we have control because pushing or shaming gets people to go along with us. But the truth is, we don’t have control. They’ll show us that whenever they want to. Accepting that we’re powerless isn’t a bad thing once we get it. It actually brings relief, taking away the weight of trying to manage someone else’s life. Over time, this freedom will make us feel a lot lighter and even happy.
Today’s Affirmation:
Being in charge of only me today makes my day seem so much easier.
Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a stable force in the recovery of many alcoholics worldwide. With over nine million copies in print (the original text has been revised), this “little book” offers daily thoughts, meditations, and prayers for living a clean and sober life. It is a spiritual resource with practical applications in our daily lives.
Karen Casey is also the best-selling author of Each Day a New Beginning, a daily meditation for Women. She has spoken on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth for more than twenty years. Casey is passionate about helping others in the Twelve Step support groups, where her own recovery from addiction began more than three decades ago.
