How hard is it to acquire wisdom?

At most meetings, the first prayer we hear is the Serenity Prayer. It’s simple and beautiful, but at first, we may just say the words without fully understanding them. Accepting what we can’t change? That feels impossible. Changing what we can? That pushes us beyond our comfort zone. And having “the wisdom to know the difference”? That part seems completely out of reach. So, how do we gain wisdom?

One of the best ways is by observing those we admire in our meetings. They don’t waste energy blaming their spouses, kids, or friends for their struggles. Instead, they focus on their own behavior—what they can control. They talk about the challenges they face within themselves and how working the Steps helps them grow. We notice something else, too. They rely on prayer and, more importantly, meditation to guide them.

There’s a quiet strength about them, a sense of stillness that they carry everywhere they go. That peace comes from trusting a Higher Power and staying committed to the principles of the program. Gaining wisdom isn’t out of reach—it just takes effort, willingness, and a commitment to personal growth. And with time, we’ll come to understand the Serenity Prayer in a way that truly changes us.

Today’s Affirmation:

If I want to acquire the wisdom to live serenely, I must be willing to do the work the program suggests. I will begin today.

A Life of My Own

A Life Of My Own

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.

This summary is not a substitute for the original book; all quotes are paraphrased and credited to the author and publisher. Thank you.
