Crises are facts of life.
It’s totally normal to think that once we get help and start working on a program, the chaos will stop. So when a new crisis hits, it can feel even more intense than before. The truth is, that the Twelve Steps can change our lives in powerful ways, but they don’t make tough stuff disappear.
We’re still going to deal with conflict, especially as we cross paths with all kinds of people on this journey. But now, we’re learning healthier ways to handle those moments.
Instead of blowing things out of proportion or needing to be right, we’re learning to take a step back, respect other people’s opinions, and not let every disagreement turn into a full-blown crisis. Most importantly, we’re learning to hand things over to a Higher Power.
We don’t always have to be in control—and honestly, stepping out of the driver’s seat can save us from a lot of crashes. When we stop trying to force everything, life tends to go a lot smoother.
…
Today’s Affirmation:
I don’t have to push a conflict to a crisis today. Instead, I can put my focus on
God.

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
