Listening is a wonderful gift we can choose to open each day.

Listening—really listening—to the people we come across each day isn’t always easy. In fact, it can be one of the toughest things to do, especially when we don’t agree with what someone is saying or it stirs up something inside us. But the truth is, listening is how we grow. It’s how we receive guidance, wisdom, and messages from something greater than ourselves.

Sometimes, when someone’s words bother us, it’s worth pausing to ask why. Maybe it’s not really about them—it could be something we need to work through ourselves. Either way, every person we encounter has something to teach us. The people in our lives aren’t random—they’re part of our journey for a reason.

The more we practice listening with intention, the more clarity and connection we’ll find—not just with others, but with ourselves and our Higher Power. So let’s take every chance we can to build those listening muscles. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have.

Today’s Affirmation:

My mind may wander when I talk with a friend today, but with God’s help, I’ll remember that I need to hear what is said.

A Life of My Own

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.

This summary is not a substitute for the original book; all quotes are paraphrased and credited to the author and publisher. Thank you.
