*April 21*
Nobody wants to be addicted to drugs or alcohol.
Why doesn’t he just stop drinking? Can’t she see how much she’s messing up her life with drugs? Most of us have asked those questions at some point. But the truth is, it takes time to really accept that our friends or loved ones are powerless over their addiction.
They didn’t start out thinking, “I’m going to get addicted.”
It just happened over time.
And one of the hardest lessons for us is realizing that we can’t fix it.
Step One reminds us that we are powerless too. Even if we get that in theory, actually accepting it is tough.
We wonder, Why can’t I get through to them? Wouldn’t change make their life better?
Going to Twelve Step meetings—and hearing others share—helps us see just how limited our control is when it comes to other people’s choices. But it also opens our eyes to how much power we do have over our own.
Bit by bit, we learn (even if we fight it at first) to let people walk their own path. Accepting our powerlessness and trusting that everyone has their own Higher Power, makes it easier to let go. It’s not easy—but we’re not alone. So many others have done it, and so can we.

Today’s Affirmation:
I may be as addicted to controlling others as they are to drugs. I will let the Steps help me today.

Today’s thought of the day is inspired by A Life of My Own, a “little book” that offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
This summary is not a substitute for the original book; all quotes are paraphrased and credited to the author and publisher. Thank you.
