A Thought for the Day

Leap Essence’s Thought for the Day is a daily meditation for those in recovery or dealing with addiction to alcohol or drugs.

Letting go over and over: That’s progress.

The first time we heard someone say “let go” at a meeting, it threw us off.

What does that even mean? How do you let go?

Honestly, even now, we still forget sometimes.

The truth is, we care deeply about the people in our lives.

We’ve spent so much time trying to guide them, stressing over their problems, and celebrating their wins.

So naturally, it feels weird to back off.

How could that possibly be wrong?

But here’s what we’ve learned: there’s nothing wrong with praying for someone or wishing them well. The problem is trying to control how they think or what they do,–whether that’s through advice, guilt, worry, or anything else.

Letting go means allowing others—whether they’re close to us or not—to make their own choices, even if we don’t agree with them.

We’ll get plenty of chances to practice this. Maybe we get a call we’d rather ignore. Maybe we meet someone who pushes our buttons. Or we’re faced with a situation we just don’t want to deal with. That’s where letting go comes in. And it will get easier over time; the more we lean into it, the lighter and more peaceful we start to feel.

Today’s Affirmation:

I may be as addicted to controlling others as they are to drugs. I will let the Steps help me today.

A Life of My Own

A Life Of My Own

Today’s thought of the day is inspired by A Life of My Own, a “little book” that offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.

This summary is not a substitute for the original book; all quotes are paraphrased and credited to the author and publisher. Thank you.
