We are not responsible for someone else’s journey.
We’ve spent a lot of our lives taking responsibility for things that weren’t really ours to carry. Maybe we covered for a friend who messed up or called in sick for a partner who had one too many drinks the night before.
Some of us even grew up hiding the truth about what was really going on at home—saying a parent was “just sick” when they were actually passed out. A lot of that came from believing that other people’s behavior reflected on us. So we tried to fix things, protect them, or keep the peace.
Taking on more than our share just became second nature. But now, part of our growth is learning to let go of that need to fix or cover for others.
It’s tough at first, but really, we’re giving them the chance to take responsibility for themselves. We’re giving them the space to grow up. What we’re learning is that everyone has their own path and their own lessons to learn. And if we stay focused on our own journey instead of trying to walk someone else’s, we’ll all get where we need to be.

Today’s Affirmation:
I sometimes still want to take responsibility for someone else. However, wanting to and doing it are two different things.

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
