To let go means to stop.

Alcoholism doesn’t just affect the person drinking—it impacts everyone around them too. One of the ways it shows up in us is this urge to control everything, and have it all go our way.

We end up stepping in and taking over stuff that really isn’t ours to handle. And of course, that leads to arguments, power struggles, and strained relationships.

Sometimes it feels impossible to let go, especially when we’re directly affected by how things turn out. But hearing how others have learned to let go—and how much better their lives are because of it—can give us the courage to try it too.

And when we finally do let go? First, we feel free. Then peaceful. And the usual tension we feel in our relationships starts to fade. Letting go means hitting pause—on arguing, trying to control, fixing, whining, or dreaming up how things should be. It means allowing people to be responsible for themselves. And in doing that, we give ourselves (and them) space to actually grow and heal.

Today’s Affirmation:

I will stop whatever I’m about to do today and think it through. If I’m intent on changing someone else, I’ll stop myself.

A Life of My Own

A Life Of My Own

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.

This summary is not a substitute for the original book; all quotes are paraphrased and credited to the author and publisher. Thank you.
