Changing our lives is a personal decision.

Most of us sought Twelve Steps recovery because we were in pain. Whether we lived with a person who has an addiction or were on the ragged edge of life because of our obsession to control other people, we needed relief. The program is giving it to us. The equation, however, calls for us to do more than just be present at meetings. We need to take certain actions if we want long-term relief.

First, we have to admit we are powerless over other people. Regardless of our certainty that we are right, they must make their own decisions, pay their own consequences. Next, we have to believe in the possibility of God. When we have made that leap of faith, our obsession to control will be lessened. Third, we have to let this new God of our understanding take charge of our lives and our wills. When others say we are in good hands, we can trust that their words are true.

These first three Steps are only the beginning, but if we work these Steps, they promise monumental changes in our lives.

Today’s Food for Thought:

I didn’t end up here because my life was wonderful, but I have the tools now to make it what I want. I’ll use these tools today.
