Alcoholism is an illness, not a judgment.

It’s not always easy to remember that our husband or daughter is sick when we are the butt of a cruel joke or the recipient of some other form of verbal abuse. Or worse. It’s particularly difficult in the early months of our recovery. Nonetheless, we keep hearing that time and patience and listening to the wisdom of others will ease our pain and heighten our understanding. We are seeing that this is true.

No one asked for the disease of alcoholism. And we didn’t intend to marry it or give birth to it. But it happened, just as cancer or depression happens. Over that part we are powerless. fortunately, we aren’t powerless over our response. Being with other people who understand, sharing our experiences, extending a helping hand to newcomers, and letting the addicted person run his or her own life make the real difference in how we feel each day.

Today’s Food for Thought:

I am grateful that I am in the caring community of a Twelve Step program. It is changing my life and my expectations of the future.

A Life Of My Own

With over nine million copies in print (the original text has been revised), this “little book” offers daily thoughts, meditations, and prayers for living a clean and sober life. A spiritual resource with practical applications to fit our daily lives.
