Coming to believe that we are equal to the people who share our lives each day and to the other men and women we meet by happenstance–this is an important gift of the Twelve Step program. Most of us, however, have had to work at self-acceptance.
Comparing ourselves to others became an obsession, and every glance at someone else became an obsession, and every glance at someone else became at time of evaluation: Were we the winners or the losers?
Knowing that each of us has a special role to play in the life of every person we’ll meet today is profoundly valuable. We will not be drawn into making comparisons. We’ll not need to feel either inferior or superior. We can be restful, knowing that we can contribute to the world as we are. Our gifts are unique and needed by the people with us right now.
I will be aware of my gifts to others today. I am what is needed.
