It never helps to be angry at the drug addict.

It is hard indeed to let go our feelings of anger, particularly when the addict in our life continues to use drugs. If we’re patient, the program can help us accept that addiction is a disease. The addict didn’t ask for it and doesn’t want it but is powerless over its invasion. Our anger can’t change that.

We too are powerless. We can’t make the addict stop using alcohol or other drugs. We can’t make the disease go away. We can’t stop the ramifications of continued use. We can’t change anyone’s life but our own. Still, this gives us the freedom from anger we need and deserve.

Most of us didn’t understand how futile and time-consuming anger was. We thought that if we got angry in the right way, we could make the alcoholic stop drinking. Repeatedly, however, we failed. How good it feels to give up anger. It has given us back our lives.

Today’s Food for Thought:

I will live my life today and not let someone else’s behavior steal my composure or my plan for the day.

A spiritual resource with practical applications to fit our daily lives.
