There is no shame in having an addiction.

Before getting involved in this program, most of us did not understand addiction as a disease. We used shame and guilt, to no avail, to keep the alcoholic or addict from drinking or drugging. We believed that person’s behavior reflected on us. We didn’t want other people to judge us as unworthy just because of the alcoholic’s or addict’s behavior.

What we have learned from others in recovery has removed the stigma about the disease. Hearing an alcoholic say he or she is grateful to be one no longer surprises us, and we are becoming grateful too for the tools we are learning to use. Our lives are far saner since coming to believe there is a Power who watches over us, and nothing fills us with fear the way everything used to.

Today’s Food for Thought:

I am truly lucky. This disease has given me a rich and rewarding life. I’ll share my good fortune with someone else today.

A Life Of My Own

Since 1954, A Life Of My Own has become a stable force in the recovery of many alcoholics throughout the world. A spiritual resource with practical applications to fit our daily lives.
