We are no longer spiritually bankrupt.
We used to think happiness was just a distant dream when we finally turned to the program for help. We’d given up on the idea that God would make things right.
Our kids were out of control, partners were distant and drinking too much, bosses were demanding, and neighbors were too nosy. Basically, no one seemed to meet our expectations. For many of us, a Twelve Step program was our last shot, and we weren’t feeling very hopeful. Prayers hadn’t worked before, so why would asking a Higher Power be any different?
One of the first things we heard was that our Higher Power, or God, answers our prayers—but not always on our schedule.
We also learned that God gives us what we need, not what we want.
The amazing part is, even though a lot of things haven’t changed—drinking is still happening, jobs are still tough, and our kids still worry us—we feel so much better than we did before.
Now, we have hope because we believe that God’s got a plan for each of us. The prayer for understanding God’s will is one that always gets answered.
Today’s Affirmation:
I won’t beseech God to do anything my way today. I’ll to know God’s way instead. My intuition can steer me.

Karen Casey, also the author of Each Day a New Beginning for women, she has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her own recovery from addiction started in Twelve Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
