Strengthening assets minimizes defects.
Step Six asks us to be fully ready to let go of our flaws and hand them over to God. But what does that really mean? None of us wants to hold onto our shortcomings, yet some of them once helped us survive. That’s why, even now, we might be afraid to let them go.
Talking to mentors, trusted friends, or others who’ve been through the process helps us see that, over time, those same flaws start working against us. What once helped us cope is now draining our spirit, hope, and relationships. Letting go isn’t easy, and it leaves a gap that needs to be filled.
Thankfully, we don’t have to figure that out alone—our support system can help guide us. This is where our strengths come in. No matter how low our self-worth might feel, we all have positive qualities. By choosing to focus on those strengths and showing up with them in our daily lives—again and again—we start to feel lighter, stronger, and more hopeful. And little by little, the burdens of our past no longer define us.
Today’s Affirmation:
I will focus on my assets today, and I’ll let others see them at work too.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
