Asking God for help is a sign of strength, not of weakness

Before joining the program, we never thought asking for help was an option. We saw it as a weakness—we believed we had to be strong, even when we were terrified. The idea of reaching out felt impossible. But joining the program was our first step in breaking down that barrier.

Since then, learning to ask for help has brought us hope and growth we never imagined. Step Seven encourages us to ask God for the help we need. For some, that feels easier than asking another person. But the real lesson isn’t who we ask—it’s simply that we ask. Admitting we need help reminds us we’re not alone. It connects us to others, to life itself. And in that connection, we find peace. We feel safe. We belong. We need others, and they need us.

Today’s Affirmation:

I will know that all is well today if I turn to God for whatever help I need. I don’t need to do anything all alone.

A Life of My Own

A Life Of My Own

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.

This summary is not a substitute for the original book; all quotes are paraphrased and credited to the author and publisher. Thank you.
