Some shortcomings seem to hang on.

Resentment is something we all feel at times. We get upset when people we don’t like achieve success, or when our neighbors seem to have it all while we’re struggling. We might envy the good looks or luck of certain friends, and we definitely get frustrated with addicts who aren’t making the changes we’re working so hard for.

So, how do we let go of resentment when it feels so natural? It never seems like we choose to feel resentful—it just happens. But through the people in this program, we’re learning that every time we feel resentment, we actually choose to hold onto it, and it never does us any good. In fact, it weighs us down. Our sponsors suggest that we pray for the people we resent—pray that they receive all the good things we want for ourselves. At first, that seems impossible, but once we try it, we’re amazed at how much lighter and more uplifted we feel.

Today’s Affirmation:

I am hanging on to some shortcomings. Today I’ll ask myself why and make a conscious decision to ask God to help me let go of them, just for today.

A Life of My Own

A Life Of My Own

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.

This summary is not a substitute for the original book; all quotes are paraphrased and credited to the author and publisher. Thank you.
