Respecting our individuality is part of recovery.
It’s completely normal to feel like we don’t fit in. Growing up, many of us were self-conscious, and that feeling doesn’t always disappear with age.
We think blending in will ease our anxiety and loneliness, so we try to adopt values and behaviors that don’t truly align with who we are. But no matter how much we try, the discomfort lingers. For many of us, pain—whether from feeling out of place or struggling in other ways—led us to seek support.
One of the first things we realize is that we’re not alone. We find others who understand us, and that brings relief and joy.
But here’s the thing: while belonging is important, it doesn’t mean we have to be exactly like everyone else. Our differences are what make us unique, and they play a role in the bigger picture. If we try too hard to fit a mold, we lose what makes us special.
Learning to appreciate our uniqueness takes time. For now, we can trust the process of growth and change—knowing that we are exactly where we’re meant to be.
Today’s Affirmation:
I do fit into God’s plan for the universe. My qualities are unique and needed for the unfolding of the whole picture.
Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. She has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her recovery from addiction started in Twelve-Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
