“God, grant me the serenity….”
The Serenity Prayer has the power to truly change our lives—but the hardest part is actually remembering to use it. At its core, this prayer gives us a chance to quiet our minds and tune in to what our Higher Power wants for us. In that stillness, we find the courage to accept what we can’t change and the strength to take action on what we can.
It’s easy to think that everyone else needs to change except us. In fact, most of us show up to our first meeting believing that if only other people would change, we’d finally be happy. But that’s not how happiness works—and thank goodness for that!
If our happiness depended on what others did, we’d be stuck living at their mercy. That’s no way to live.
True happiness comes from two things:
- Accepting others as they are and letting go of the need to control them.
- Committing to our own growth and actually following through on the changes we can make.
When we use the Serenity Prayer, we take back control of our happiness. It reminds us that real peace comes from within—not from changing the world around us, but by changing how we respond to it.

Today’s Affirmation:
I will find as much happiness as I want today. The Serenity Prayer, used often, will be the key.

Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a key resource for alcoholics in recovery worldwide, with over nine million copies in print. This revised “little book” offers daily reflections, meditations, and prayers to support a clean and sober life, with practical spiritual guidance for everyday living.
Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning, she has spent over 20 years speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth. Her own recovery from addiction started in Twelve Step groups more than 30 years ago, and she’s passionate about helping others in those same groups.
