Nobody can change my thoughts but me.
The first of the Twelve Steps asks us to admit we are powerless. You might wonder, “Why do I need to do that? Shouldn’t I be trying to change others too?”
But once we get involved in this community, we’ll start to see why Step One is important. You’ll realize that you really can’t control other people. You can argue, beg, or try to make them see things your way, but you can’t force them to change. At the same time, you’re not powerless over yourself. Not today.
It might feel too simple to say your problems come from the way you think, especially since other people play a role in your life. But the truth is, you are the ones who decide how you interpret everything that’s happening. And you have the choice to see each experience as a chance to grow, or as part of a bigger plan (God’s will). The old-timers say that’s what Step Three is all about.

Today’s Affirmation:
I can’t change anyone else; all I can change is my mind. I will carefully watch my thoughts today.
Since 1954, A Life of My Own has been a stable force in the recovery of many alcoholics worldwide. With over nine million copies in print (the original text has been revised), this “little book” offers daily thoughts, meditations, and prayers for living a clean and sober life. It is a spiritual resource with practical applications in our daily lives.
Karen Casey is also the best-selling author of Each Day a New Beginning, a daily meditation for Women. She has spoken on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth for more than twenty years. Casey is passionate about helping others in the Twelve Step support groups, where her own recovery from addiction began more than three decades ago.
