Patanjali on Dormant Forces and Becoming Alive.
The author of the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali, lived in India, one to three centuries before Christ. He was the person who established the meditation tradition that we’ve come to enjoy, a mathematician of mysticism, and an Einstein in the world of the Buddhas.
Regarding the dormant forces within us, Yogist master, Patanjali, was one of the earlier sages to unravel the power of the mind.
In his scriptures and teaching, Patanjali put it this way: When some great purpose inspires you, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds. Your mind transcends limitation, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties, and talents became alive, and you discover yourself to be a more remarkable person by far than you ever dreamed yourself.”―PATANJALI (C. THIRD CENTURY B.C.)
To put Patanjali’s powerful Ideas to use, do the following:
- Jot down in a notebook the activities of your life that you feel most in spirit (inspired) by, that which brought you the most joy.
- Listen only to the voice within you that attracts you to that activity.
- Then filter out advice from those telling you what they think you should be doing with your life.
- As Patanjali explains, the key here is to become inspired from within, not from without. As the 1800s American essayist Ralph W. Emerson put it, “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Dormant forces become alive once you ask yourself the following: Is this alive time or dead time?
