Searching for Wholeness in All the Wrong Places by Eckhart Tolle

Death stripped away all that is not you.

Eckhart Tolle.

As long as the egoic mind runs your life, you cannot indeed be at ease, at peace, or truly fulfilled.

Why?

Well, according to Tolle, the ego’s needs are endless.

And since the ego is a derived sense of self, it needs to identify with external things.

But as Tolle mentioned: these “external things” are not — you.

Hence, identifying with the mind will likely create a false self (an ego) substituted for your true self-rooted into Being.

Jesus famously put it this way: you become a “branch cut off from the vine.”

Certainly, Tolle’s not asking you to believe that your identity cannot be found in any of those things.

It’s just that, if you live enough, you’ll know the truth of it for yourself.

You alone plan to commit a sin, you alone plan to do evil; and you alone can escape sin and purify your thoughts. Only your inner self can damn you, and only your inner self can save you. —Dhammapada, a book of Buddhist wisdom.

You will know it at the latest when you feel death approaching.

Death stripped away all that is not you. Writes Tolle. And the secret of life is to “die before you die” — and find that there is no death.

The mind in itself is not dysfunctional. On the contrary, it is a beautiful tool.

The dysfunction sets in when you seek yourself in it and mistake it for who you are.

It becomes the egoic mind that can indeed take over your whole life if left untamed.
